Google's withdrawal from China pushing itself

Google's withdrawal from China pushing itself into cornerBEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -tiffany jewelry- Google's decision to stop censoring its Chinese search engine and redirect mainland users to its servers in Hong Kong was tantamount to pushing itself into a corner and ruining its image and interests, world media and experts say."If Google had hoped to rally rivals to its cause, it failed. If Google was planning to embarrass China by whipping up a global debate on Internet freedom, it failed," the Financial Times wrote in an article published Monday.China trade economist Derek Scissors of the U.S. Heritage Foundation called Google's move to Hong Kong "pretty close to a complete exit" that will provoke Beijing and puts Google outside the firewall with regard to advertisers and other partners.Russian newspaper Vedomosti said Google has completely burned all of its bridges in China behind it and is unlikely to ever return to the Chinese market.Google, the world's top search engine, held only an estimated 30 percent share of China's search market in 2009, compared with home-grown rival Baidu Inc's 60 percent. Official statistics put the number of netizens in China at 384 million by the end of 2009.Michel Riguidel, head of the Department of Computer Science and Networks at Telecom Paris Tech, said all companies pay great attention to building their own images.Google claimed that its image is based on freedom, information exchange and respecting human rights, but the fact is that it absorbs large amounts of personal information and does research on the information without getting agreements from web users, Riguidel said.Izumi Harada, chief fellow of the Crisis and Risk Management Society of Japan, told Xinhua that there is no question that multinational companies should follow local laws while running their businesses in other countries.Google has breached the commitment to observe Chinese laws and regulations that it made when entering China (four years ago), he said.Jesse Wright, a leading expert of Institute Internet, told a Russian radio station that Google has been working in China since 2005 and knows the requirements of Chinese law."Compliance with the requirements of the Chinese was a condition of work in this market," Wright said. "So, trying to force China to reconsider its own censorship requirements - be it Google or others - it seems to me untenable."Alexey Basov, CEO and co-founder of Beguntiffany jewellery, Russia's largest contextual ad service, said if Google quits the Chinese market, it will be a major strategic loss for the company. At about 3 a.m. Tuesday Beijing time, Google's chief legal officer David Drummond made the "stop censoring" announcement in a blog post, saying "users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored searches in simplified Chinese."In reaction, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a routine media briefing that: "The Google case is just a business case and will not undermine China-U.S. relations unless someone politicizes the issue."

Spring time in bike laneEver since

Spring time in bike laneEver since the first snow, which came the end of October, marked the beginning of an early winter in Beijing, I've been asking when spring will come. On Monday, I woke up again to a blanket of white in the garden and the swishing sound of brooms sweeping pavementtiffany jewellery, my hopes for an early spring dashed. The cold of winter is unpleasant, but not unbearable. I don't mind pristine snow turning into murky slush on the streets. What does bother me about this season is that it keeps me from being in my favorite place in Beijing - in the bike lane. To grow up Chinese is to grow up on two wheels, but it wasn't until I was an adult and started experiencing Beijing traffic in a car that I truly began to appreciate the bicycle. Once, I was headed to a location just three kilometers north of my apartment. Google Maps estimated it was a six-minute car ride away. In reality, it took me twenty-five minutes inching along in a taxi to get there. That was when I decided to start turning again to my blue bicycle, a most convenient vehicle outfitted with a low top tube and a basket, perfect for a girl's skirt and purse. I figured that while the cars sit in agonizing gridlock, I could fly by on my bike. But I soon learned that getting back on the bike would not mean pedaling through the same Beijing that I explored on the backseat of my mother's bicycle twenty years ago. Out of practice, I was by far the slowest cyclist on the road. Senior citizens pedaling bicycles laden with goods from the outdoor markets passed me. Even rusty homemade contraptions were traveling faster than me on my blue bicycle. Speed wasn't my only problem. I was also grossly out of touch with the rules of the road. The last time I rode on a bicycle here there were still traffic policemen waving their arms at every intersection. When I saw them I would hop off the backseat because it was against the law to carry passengers on a bike, although every mother and child did it anyway. Compare then with now, when following traffic rules are widely ignored. As soon as I rolled out of the gate of my peaceful apartment complex, vehicles came at me from six directions. Bikes, cars, motorcycles and those perpetually honking electric bikes swerved dangerously close to me. I quickly learned that survival in the bike lane meant ignoring traffic lights, working my way into the middle of a pack, and going in the same direction, and at the same time, as everybody else. Despite the road hazardstiffany jewelry, I love rediscovering the freedom of traveling by bike. Thankfully, Beijing has extensively paved bicycle lanes. I can come and go when I please, without fighting to hail a taxi or haggling with "black cab" drivers. I even enjoy the camaraderie of jostling for my place in the bicycle hoard and shouting "Kanche" to anyone veering too close for comfort. Getting around Beijing by bicycle makes me feel truly a part of the city. Some days - those precious few days each month - when the air is crisp and the sky is blue, pedaling on my bike reminds me of my childhood when I watched the wonders of the city go by in a blur on the back of my mother's bike. But most days, even when it's muggy and crowded, I get a thrill out of transporting myself from place to place independently, without spending a dime and doing no harm to the environment. And so, I keep watching for signs of spring while dusting off my blue bicycle. The writer is a freelancer and blogger.

Soak up the beauty of an old water townShipi

Soak up the beauty of an old water townShipi lane, paved with 216 slab stones, is mere 1-m wide.As an "immigrant" from the south of the countryGucci Rings, I see all of southern China as my hometown. Let me show you around a small town here. Compared to Zhouzhuang and Wuzhen, Zhejiang province's Xitang is far less well known. But even so, it formed the backdrop to director John Woo's epic blockbuster Mission Impossible III. I first learnt about the town from a travel blog. Ever since I've been itching to get a closer look at its extraordinary beauty. After an approximately one-hour drive from Shanghai, I arrive at Xitang train station. I am surprised to see the area dominated by hotels, residential buildings as well as large squares, just like those in the city I'm trying to escape. "This is not the place you are planning to visit. That lies beyond the end of the road," says a pedicab driver at the station. After some bargaining, he takes me through long, narrow lanes, until I find myself in the small and mystical water town with a 1,000-year history. This has to be a photographer's dream destination. Every turn throws up an amazing vista that makes for quite an extraordinary photograph, by even the most clumsy shutterbug. Stone-paved trails lead to old houses with carved wooden windows, tiled roofs, and lines of red lanterns, that line the water's edge. The whole town seems untouched by modern life. Residents, unfazed by the sight of tourists like me, go about their everyday business, starting up fires for their cooking and doing their laundry by the river running through the town. And where there is water, there has to be bridges. More than 100 stone arch and beam bridges of different shapes and sizes connect the water town into one entity. Among these thousand-year-old bridges, a prominent one is Songzi Laifeng QiaoGucci Bracelets. The story goes that crossing it will bring one many sons and daughters. The town is crisscrossed by lanes - 122 in all - which have their own hierarchy of importance. The most famous is Shipi lane, paved with just 216 slab stones, and a mere 1-m-wide. At its narrowest, it is barely 0.8 m, so that I can hardly even extend my arms all the way. But it is a good place to strike a pose, holding yourself between the walls, just like Spiderman. During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, Xitang was a commercial town with many shops lining the banks of the river. The roofed corridors of storefronts, extending up to 1,000 m, bear witness to this past. Once a place for trading, they now house shops, hostels, tea houses and restaurants. After strolling for several hours, I stop by for a late lunch at a restaurant by the water, with a perfect view of the town. It soon starts raining. The entire landscape is veiled in a thin mist with the rainwater falling and disappearing into the river. The romance of the scene washes over me and I call to the waiter: "Please get me a bottle of the local yellow wine." However, I fail to finish it, thanks to its strong flavor. It is time to get back to realityGucci Earrings.

Hey moms, keep an eye on your sons!

Hey moms, keep an eye on your sons!Imagine the situation of a mother wanting to report her child's activities to authoritiesmens tiffany necklaces. The awkward "mother vs. son" scenario may happen next year as the city's Internet watchdog urges local mothers to help fight pornography and "vulgar" information online. Determined to start the campaign from a grassroots level, the authorities said they will select a group of mothers to form a special censorship panel and help the authorities monitor websites and WAP content in the mothers' spare time, according to the government-funded Beijing Association of Online Media, which runs an illegal Internet information reporting hotline. The concerned mothers will also determine which content is "harmful". "Throughout the campaign, parents, especially mother netizens, tend to be more sensitive to Internet vulgarism, so their opinions should be important reference," the Xinhua News Agency quoted an unnamed official from the association at the meeting. Authorities nationwide launched a carpet sweep last month against online pornography, violent and political sensitive information. National television network CCTV reported the widespread pornography in cyber space has been "an imminent curse" for school children. Internet watchdogs closed down thousands of websites with obscene content banned by the authorities. And police have arrested their founders in the campaign. Chen Hua, director of the city's Internet administration office under the municipal publicity department, also said at the meeting Beijing's fight with online pornography is "a long-term battle" which will last for another year. "Related institutions should be ready for a long battle with the campaign against mobile phone pornography. They must come up with new mechanisms to eliminate such content completely," Chen said. The Beijing Communications Administration, along with related government agencies, has shut down more than 3,100 websites with obscene and vulgar content and removed 300,000 illegal posts so far this yearmens tiffany ring. The national Internet authorities this month also promised up to 10,000 yuan awards for informers of vulgar online content. Li Zhen, a Beijing mother of a 14-year-old junior student, said she will not go so far as reporting her teenage son who may be exposed to online pornography. But she said she will provide related information to the authorities. "Most boys at my sons' age are pretty sure about what they should see online and what they should not," said the 39-year-old mother. "I guess most mothers know how to keep their children at a suitable distance from the adult world," she said. Beijing now has 4.5 million broadband users and nearly 18 million mobile phone users with the potential to surf online through WAP services. Phones at the Beijing Internet illegal information report center went unanswered yesterday.

Canadian guilty of planning homegrown terror plot

BRAMPTON, Ontario ¨C A member of a homegrown terrorist group was found guilty Thursday of participating in a plot to set off truck bombs in front of Canada's main stock exchange and two government buildings.

Shareef Abdelhaleem, 34, was a member of the so-called Toronto 18 plot to set off bombs outside Toronto's Stock Exchange, a building housing Canada's spy agency and a military base. The goal was to scare Canada into removing its troops from Afghanistan.Mens tiffany jewellery

The prosecution prevailed because the defense elected not to present any evidence to establish Abdelhaleem's guilt or innocence, said Dan Brien, a spokesman with the Public Prosecution Service of Canada.

The prosecution's only witness, Shaher Elsohemy, was a former friend of Abdelhaleem who became a police agent and infiltrated the terror cell.

Elsohemy testified that Abdelhaleem initially balked at the terror plan but became excited at the prospect of profiting from an attack on the stock exchange.

The mastermind behind what a judge called the "spine-chilling" plot, Zakaria Amara, 24, was convicted earlier this week and sentenced to life.cheap tiffany necklaces

The Jordanian-born Canadian citizen received Canada's first life sentence for a terrorism offense, and the maximum sentenced under Canada's anti-terrorism laws, though he could seek parole as early as 2016.

As for the rest of members of the Toronto 18, four have now pleaded guilty and one was convicted after a trial.

Charges were stayed or dropped against seven people and six men still face trial. One man's trial began last week and five others face a trial in March.

Abdelhaleem's trial is expected to continue next week with arguments on the entrapment motion.

China says Google, foreign firms must respect laws

BEIJING (Reuters) ¨C Foreign firms, including Google, must respect Chinese laws and customs, China's foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday, a week after the world's largest search engine said it might pull out of China due to hacking and censorship.

Ma Zhaoxu also said he did not know whether Chinese officials had held talks with Google executives tiffany charms for necklace. Google said it would seek meetings on how to offer a legal, unfiltered search service after losing intellectual property to a sophisticated cyber-attack that also affected more than 30 other firms.

"The Chinese government encourages the development of the Internet," Ma said.

"Foreign firms in China should respect China's laws and regulations, and respect China's public customs and traditions, and assume the corresponding social responsibilities, and of course Google is no exception."

Ma's comments mostly repeated the foreign ministry's statements on Thursday, but this was the first time the foreign ministry referred directly to Google.

No kick from Champagne? Consider sparklers

NEW YORK - No kick from Champagne? Sparkling wines from around the globe can be a cheaper alternative and better value, according to leading experts.

"We noticed a real trade down from Champagne to sparkling wines," said Chris Adams of New York's Sherry-Lehmann Wine and Spirits.

Shipments of Champagne worldwide plunged almost 35 percent for the first nine months of the year, according to the Comite Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne, the champagne producers' professional body.

In Britain total shipments were down almost 32 percent, while in the United States they plummeted more than 41 percent,

Prices on non-vintage Champagnes have come down a bit in price in the United States, but are still from one-third to four times as much as their Italian, Spanish, French counterpart.

For consumers looking for something of equal quality, but less pricey, the answer may be in northern Italy and the Trentino region home to Ferrari Spumante, says to Wink Lorch, who writes the online winetravelguides.com.

Its Giulio Ferrari 1997 made from hand-harvested Chardonnay grapes and in the traditional Champagne method tiffany rings on sale, it sells for about two-thirds the price of its tete de cuvee French cousins.

Italy's answer to Champagne is Franciacorta. The hand-harvested grapes used are Chardonnay, Pinot Blanco and Pinot Nero and the wines are also made in the same method as Champagne.

Most of the producers are small, family-run operations and there is only about 5,000 acres under cultivation, as opposed to the 80,000 acres in Champagne.

Ed McCarthy, editor of the Wine Review Online and co-author of the book "Wines for Dummies," recommends producers Bellavista and Ca' del Bosco. British wine writer Hugh Johnson suggests Cavalleri and others recommend Lantieri de Paratico and Villa Franciacorta.

Across Lake Garda is the home of Prosecco. Typically light-bodied, fruity and less crip than Champagne, the best ones have come traditionally from the Conegliano Valdobbiadene area. It is made using the Charmat method, in which the grapes undergo a second fermentation in tanks.

Top producers include Bisol & Figli, Adriano Adami, and Mionetto, writes Karen MacNeil in "The Wine Bible". Other wine writers add Maschio dei Cavalieri, Nino Franco and Zardetto to list.

Spain's sparkler is Cava. Its main grapes are Macabeo, Parellada and Xarel-lo and the vast majority of the wine comes from the Catalonia region.

Pale gold in color with the aromas of toasted bread and citrus fruit, the producers also use the Champagne method. As in Prosecco, it pays to spend just a tad more to get a much better quality wine, said wine critic Doug Frost.

Joan Sanda, Agusti Torello, Montsarra, Segura Viudas and Raventos i Blanc are among the region's top producers.

Champagne is not the only region in France that makes sparkling wines. Cremant d'Alsace, Cremant de Limoux tiffany charms for necklace, or Cremant de Jura also provide good alternatives.

Some of Champagnes' major houses also own vineyards in California, Chile, Argentina and Brazil and produce sparkling wines that are quite good and, because of the exchange rate and transportation costs, less expensive.

And as Robin Goldstein and Alexis Herschkowitsch reveal in the 2010 edition of their book "The Wine Trials" most Americans again preferred Domaine Ste. Michelle Brut from Washington State, over both Dom Perignon or Veuve Clicquot in blind tastings.

There are many other sparklers - Sekt from Germany, Spumante from Italy and Shiraz from Australia. The important thing to remember about drinking sparkling wine is that it's not so much what's in the glass as who is holding it. Cheers.
